Grounding and Flowers

Mary Magdalene and Flower, drawing by Tanya Torres
Today’s Mary Magdalene drawing

As a child, I used to watch my grandfather work a little piece of land behind his house while he planted corn. As he worked, I used to pick flowers and make crowns for myself.

I don’t remember if I pretended to be anything like a princess or a fairy, but I remember the beauty of the flowers and the sensation of wearing them on my head. I grew up longing for the countryside, for my grandmother’s presence, and for the freedom to play barefooted in the earth.

I think this is why I always, in my heart, want to go back there. My house is in the same spot as my grandfather’s garden. It is a place of grounding for my soul, and it will, in the future, be a place of grounding for my body.

I recently saw a documentary about grounding by stepping barefoot on the earth. The person that came up with this idea knew about how electricity works. One day he saw a large group of people exiting a bus. He noticed they were all wearing sneakers with plastic soles. This made him wonder if, with the soles preventing grounding, this might be the reason why so many people have pains, illness and unbalances in their bodies. He tested the hypothesis on himself by extending a cable from his bed to outside the window and into the ground so that his bed could be a grounding surface while he slept. In a couple of weeks, his pain had gone and he felt healed.

One of the stories in the documentary tells of how Native American mothers would tell their children to take off their shoes or they could get ill. My grandmother certainly would not have encouraged me to walk barefoot, but I wonder if my grandfather planted because something in his being remembered how it felt to touch the earth. I don’t remember ever eating the corn…

Now, so far from that land, I feel an overwhelming desire to touch the earth with my feet!

For me, the connection to Mary Magdalene has always been about healing. My spritual awakening came slowly as a result of an illness, and my encounter with Mary Magdalene and all that she means, came soon after. Through reading books about her, I learned about spiritual concepts and ideas that inform my life, art and vision for the future. Anything I learn related to healing or spirituality since then, I consider it to be guidance from Mary Magdalene.

There are so many little pieces of information to be gathered and learned. Painting Mary Magdalene has been a way to collect them like flowers in a field. They come together in a crown that playfully leads into a deeper reality beyond the normal, logical or prescribed. Just as the child, the woman wants to connect to, and feel, the wisdom of the Earth.
