Today is Easter, a celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, Mary Magdalene is the first witness of the Resurrection and, as time passed, apocryphal stories emerged related to this Biblical event.
Have you ever seen icons of Mary Magdalene holding a red egg? Do you know the story of Mary Magdalene and the Red Egg?
One of the stories tells us that Mary Magdalene brought a basket of white boiled eggs with her on Easter morning to the tomb of Jesus. When she arrived at the site of the Resurrection, the stone was already rolled away. She also found that the eggs in her basket had turned red.
Another time, she went to see the Emperor Tiberius Caesar in Rome to proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. She held an egg in her hand as she proclaimed: “Christ is risen!”
The emperor mocked her, saying that Jesus had no more risen than the egg in her hand was red. Immediately, the egg turned red.
The Emperor saw this as a sign from God, and heeded her complaints about Pilate condemning an innocent man to death, and had Pilate removed from Jerusalem.
The Easter egg, a symbol of the Christ’s Resurrection, became a symbol for the rebirth of all mankind. “Easter eggs” were shared among Christians as a joyful symbol of Christian hope.
