Starting a Small Painting

Today’s drawing is the initial step for a small oil painting on canvas. Now that I have a few days at home, I want to get started again painting. I decided to start with a small painting to warm up. Starting tomorrow, I will be continuing the 18” x 24” new canvases that I would like to complete by July 20, the date of this year’s Mary Magdalene Celebration.
Painting, drawing, writing. These are the practices I cultivate in order to bring forward my mission to create more love, peace and joy in the world. But like many human beings, when the time comes to do what I love, there are always obstacles I place in my own way. In order to ease myself into the practices, I have to be patient and understanding with myself. I have to make an effort to remember to trust myself, that I have done it before and that I am capable of doing it again. If I am out of practice or out of time, or if I am just very tired, then I can do a little, a tiny part, until I can do a bigger part, or a full piece. This may not be the ideal way, but it’s a way for someone who is committed. The time will come again when I will no longer need this method, but I feel that right now is part of the lessons I’m learning in order to be ready for the next part of my life.
This is as far as I got today with this small 8” x 10” canvas:

I would like to share the abstract little 5” x 7” canvas I usually make with the leftover paint. Think of it as an abstract Mary Magdalene. I like to use a small canvas board as a palette, so that any remaining paint can become a small abstract painting.

I look forward to continuing this process tomorrow and sharing my progress. I also look forward to preparing more drawings on canvas so that they are ready to paint when I have to go back to work.
Tomorrow will be a great day!
