Self Care Comes from the Heart

Growing Heart: A Magdalene by Tanya Torres. Self care comes from the heart.
Growing Heart

The phrase self-care has become extremely popular and often related to going to the salon, getting a massage, or maybe doing a little shopping. These momentary activities feel good and relax our bodies, and may bring joy to our hearts at the moment they take place. Then we go back to regular life, and the stress comes right back.

That’s because stress, unhappiness, discomfort or any other expression of unwellness are signals that come from a deeper place than our skin, hair and nails. It’s our soul communicating that a little growth is needed.

One of the greatest forms of discomfort is repetitive thoughts. If we pay attention, we can often catch ourselves thinking the same thought over and over.

These obsessive thoughts take over our mind and impede us from enjoying, planning, or even thinking new thoughts. We become too preoccupied with the perceived problem that recurs in our mind.

This kind of thought will always be present. It will be present because when the thought is positive and creative, it is the tool for realizing projects and dreams. It is the kind of thought that helps artists make art and musicians create music. It is the kiss of the muse. This kind of thought is a signal from our soul.

But when the thought is negative… it destroys our capacity to enjoy and create.

If we think back, the repetitive thought is probably different from last years’ thought (or last decade’s thought…) but its insistence is familiar. If we look back and remember our previous obsessive thoughts and how they might have stopped, we can get a clue as to how to stop the present one.

To gain insight, we can ask our growing heart what it wants. The thought is a sign that our heart needs to grow in a different direction. Like the stem of a plant or the branch of a tree, we need to grow to a higher level.

Once we hear our heart, we can take a step in the direction our heart indicates. We all know what we want and need, it’s just too difficult to distinguish because we are so busy telling ourselves what we need to do or what we should want.

The next moment, after listening to the whispers of our heart (or the screams in some cases,) we will notice that we are living the same life. But something will feel different. We will have stopped wrestling for a moment. Because we took one little step toward our heart’s vision. That makes our heart happy, and restful.

For sure, the thought will return. It won’t be over so fast. But step by little step, we’ll transform. We will have practiced a deep form of self care. Our heart will have grown, and the ethereal light of wisdom will be a little brighter to illuminate the way.
