Does this image look familiar? Many of us will see this image and notice that something is different. Or notice that the image we have seen before was attributed to Perugino, not Raffaello. The image we have seen before has an inscription on the dress that reads “S. Maria Madalena.” This is not, obviously, the same image.
The popular painting of Mary Magdalene by Perugino was not the first, but a copy of the painting by Raffaello, according to recent studies and based on the provenance of the paintings.
This painting was recently attributed to Raffaello Sanzio, the Renaissance painter, and was purchased at auction for just £30,000. It was believed to have been created by an anonymous disciple of Raffaello Sanzio, but studies revealed that it was in fact the work of the master painter.
