Magdalena Amor by Corazón Tierra
With bright colors and a serene expression, Corazón Tierra's Magdalena Amor touches the heart with joy and tenderness. This painting was created after attending the Painting Mary Magdalene classes that took place earlier this year on Zoom. This piece began as a watercolor that was later enlarged and turned into an acrylic painting. During this process, Corazón further developed the ability to transfer her artistic dance skills into other media, a process that had already begun when she began painting by hand her dance costumes. In this artwork, Corazón explores curves in color and line, paralleling her dance choreographies presented during the Mary Magdalene Celebration.
This artwork is part of the collective art exhibition dedicated to Mary Magdalene titled Blossoming, July 18-22 in El Barrio Art Space Art Gallery, with a reception on Saturday, July 22, 2023, during The Mary Magdalene Celebration. Corazón will be opening the space for the ceremony at 4:00 pm that day, as well as leading the community in joyful dance. This event is possible thanks to La Casa de La Herencia Cultural Puertorriqueña, Inc.
About the Artist Corazon Tierra is an interdisciplinary dance artist, dance educator, poet and writer. She has spent the past two decades creating experiences that blur the boundaries between art and life, and between personal transformation and community healing. Moving beyond traditional notions of dance, Tierra offers her creations as an invitation to be present in the body, in the here and now, free of shame and judgment. A key aspect in her dance work is the exploration of kinesthetic empathy as a means to harmonize the Self with others, community and the planet.
Tierra is best known for harmoniously fusing her poetry and dance in performances that challenge beauty perceptions and reveal the connection of the female body with the natural world. Many of her works have been inspired in her healing process from anorexia and in goddess archetypes, such as CuerpOdiosa/Goddess/ dam Body; Nine Faces of Oyá/Faces of the Earth; Unraveling Absence and The Vessel Goddess: Origins.
Her interdisciplinary dance work reaches women and families in spaces out of the theater: in community centers, churches, schools, bakeries, galleries, gardens, patios, and cafes. Tierra has shared her work in the US and internationally: in women festivals in Spain, in townships in South, under the sky in the African Karoo desert, and at the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña in Puerto Rico. In the last years Corazon has developed various explorative dance forms that emphasize community engagement and collaborative choreography. The CanvasDiving Dances take place inside a visual art exhibit and offer viewers the opportunity to experience the paintings in the gallery in an embodied way. DanzaYo is a community dance practice that guides in the creation and sharing of an original group dance in a course of a few hours.
Tierra is the official dancer of the Mary Magdalene Celebration, a multidisciplinary project created by artist Tanya Torres and musician Raquel Rivera. As part of this collaborative project, Corazon has created a series of dance meditations inspired in Mary Magdalene: Promise (2013); Sacred Heart Sacred Dance (2016); Devotion I (2017), Dancing the Dark Magdalene (2018), and Devotion II (2019). Tierra holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Hofstra University, a Master of Arts in Dance and Somatic Movement Education from the University of Central Lancashire (UK), and a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education and Social Emotional Learning from Erikson Institute. She is certified as a Language of Dance Master Practitioner and is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator with ISMETA.
