A Step Into Beauty

My sketchbook is almost full now. There’s only a few pages left. How many will I fill this year? Probably around 4!
Tonight I wanted to go back to a watercolor I did a while ago that appears in the card titled Creativity in the Magdalene Muses Card Deck created by Patti Ashley with her words and my art. It was the card that came out in the podcast that she invited me to do with her, where we spoke about the project.
I like to do this kind of face, very simple and iconic, peaceful and still. Unfortunately, I did it in the sketchbook. The paper weight of a sketchbook is great for pencil but not so good for watercolors. The water is not absorbed properly and it warps and wrinkles. I knew that…
Tonight, I will try to flatten it so I can finish it tomorrow. In any case, it was a good practice drawing the face and getting the proportions I like. I have published some drawings here that I would not have shown anyone if I didn’t promise. But this process is about the practice, and the commitment. It’s about the act.
Not all art products are good. But if we don’t do a bunch of not great pieces, then how will we get to the good ones?
For a painting on canvas of Mary Magdalene, I would have probably measured more, reworked it, erased, until getting to a drawing that is more defined and harmonious. But in my sketchbook, I just draw freely. I accept imperfection.
Imperfect is a step into beauty.
And beauty with a little imperfection leaves room for growth.
